Aging is the last thing any woman wants to think about especially as we get older. However, it is inevitable and a natural part of life. Women should not fear aging but instead embrace it. I know it is hard to do that when we live in a society where youth is glamorized. However, we are all aging and not one person is getting younger so instead of fearing the inevitable we should all stand together and tackle the hard, tough, and difficult topics that all women will face, or are facing. It's unfortunate that society puts a negative stigma on menopause, and aging but I think that is in large part of society not being properly educated on these issues. Of course topics that people are unaware of tend to be associated with negative behavior but exploiting these issues on a national level will alert people that aging and menopause are normal. I also think that society’s negative view on aging is due in large part of being shamed and shut out by our own society because aging is not supposed to be discussed. In order to change these views and misconceptions the mass media should shed some positive light on aging, and menopause. By showing society that these changes are okay and normal it helps society except and come to terms with this natural change that will happen to all women at some point in their lives. The more people become educated on these issues the more positive effects and self acceptance everyone will have for not only themselves but for others as well. Also, I think that women who are facing menopause, and ageing should join classes that help them face some of the changes that they are going through. These self help classes will not only help women cope with the changes they are facing, but also surround these women with women who are also going through the same changes. Women should not have to go through menopause, or other bodily changes alone but instead tackle these issues and changes together. By focusing on our future and excepting life’s natural process this will not only benefit those going through this life changing process but also help prepare women who are about to go through the same process of life. Educating people and self acceptance is key in order to change societies view on menopause, and aging women.

Hello Brittany,
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right about how society views menopause and aging. It is unfortunate that society is so obsessed with youth. Goodness, look at all the botched plastic surgery in the celebrity world alone. It is much more natural and peaceful to focus on things you have control over, like healthy eating, exercise, relationships, and helping others. But until we get the point to men as well, and stop catering to the mentality of older women and menopause being a "problem to fix" we will not see real societal change. Men in the medical community, as well as the media could have a huge impact in this area.
Thanks,

Hi Brittany,
ReplyDeleteWise words indeed. I totally agree with your thoughts. I believe the misconception from society, is that age takes away from beauty, when in fact it adds to it. You're right, in order to change societies views about age and menopause, we must educate the public. There is no running from this process, so women must learn to embrace these issues. I think a self acceptance class is a great idea. There are so many positive aspects to aging that can be identified instead of focusing on the negative changes caused by menopause. Great Post.
